Occasional forgetfulness, like misplacing keys or blanking on a name, is common as we age, and memory supplements are one of the fastest-growing supplement categories. Advanced Memory Formula from Advanced Bionutritionals is a popular one, marketed with a reference to “Nobel Prize-winning memory breakthroughs.” Here is what’s really in it, what that Nobel Prize refers to, what the research says, and who should skip it.
Our verdict

Advanced Memory Formula combines 11 well-known brain-health nutrients, including bacopa, phosphatidylserine, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-GPC and coffee fruit extract (NeuroFactor™), and it has an unusually generous 90-day guarantee that covers empty bottles. What does “Nobel Prize-winning” mean here?
The sales page refers to Dr. Rita Levi-Montalcini, who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that helps nerve cells grow and survive. The Nobel Prize was awarded for that scientific discovery. It was not awarded for this supplement or any of its ingredients.

Advanced Memory Formula ingredients: what the research says
The official page lists 11 nutrients: blueberry, NeuroFactor™ (whole coffee fruit extract), bacopa monnieri, ginkgo biloba, luteolin, lecithin, alpha-GPC, calcium, phosphorus, acetyl-L-carnitine and phosphatidylserine. Here is what independent research says about the main ones.
Bacopa monnieri
An herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. A meta-analysis of 9 randomized trials (518 people) found bacopa may improve some aspects of cognition, particularly speed of attention, but the authors said larger, well-designed trials are needed. Benefits in studies usually took 8 to 12 weeks to appear.
Phosphatidylserine (PS)
A fatty substance found in cell membranes, especially in the brain. The FDA allows a “qualified health claim” that PS may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly, but with the required caveat that the supporting research is “very limited and preliminary.”
Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC)
A form of carnitine that crosses into the brain. A 2003 meta-analysis of trials in people with mild cognitive impairment found an advantage over placebo, but other reviews concluded the evidence isn’t strong enough to recommend it, and its role is still debated.
Alpha-GPC
A choline compound that may raise levels of acetylcholine, a brain chemical involved in memory. Studies in people with dementia have shown some improvements in test scores, but there is little evidence that it improves memory in healthy people.
NeuroFactor™ (whole coffee fruit extract)
An extract of the whole coffee cherry. A small study funded by its maker found it raised blood levels of BDNF, a protein that supports brain cells, for a couple of hours. Whether that translates into better memory hasn’t been shown in large trials.
Ginkgo biloba
One of the best-known memory herbs, but the evidence is disappointing. According to the NIH’s NCCIH, a large study of more than 3,000 people aged 75 and older found ginkgo did not prevent dementia or cognitive decline. Ginkgo can also increase bleeding risk in people taking blood thinners such as warfarin.
Blueberry, luteolin, lecithin, calcium and phosphorus
Blueberries and luteolin are plant antioxidants studied for brain health, lecithin supplies choline, and calcium and phosphorus are basic minerals. They are sensible additions, but none is a proven memory booster on its own.
Bottom line on ingredients: Advanced Memory Formula uses a thoughtful mix of the most-studied memory nutrients. The research on several of them is promising but mixed, mostly small, and often in people who already have cognitive problems. Doses aren’t fully disclosed, so it’s hard to compare with the studies.

Memory problems? See a doctor first
Memory changes that affect daily life, like getting lost in familiar places, repeating the same questions, or trouble managing money, aren’t a normal part of aging and should be checked by a doctor. Some causes are treatable, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, medication side effects, poor sleep and depression. A supplement is not a substitute for a medical evaluation.

Advanced Memory Formula has a 90-day “down-to-the-last-pill” money-back guarantee: return your bottles, even empty ones, within 90 days for a refund. You pay return shipping. That is longer than most supplements, which usually offer 60 days.
Who should skip Advanced Memory Formula
Talk to your doctor first, and skip it unless your doctor says it’s fine, if you:
- Take blood thinners (such as warfarin), aspirin or other anti-platelet drugs, because of ginkgo
- Take medicine for dementia, Parkinson’s disease, seizures or depression
- Have a bleeding disorder or surgery coming up
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease: see your specialist, as no supplement treats these conditions

Can it prevent Alzheimer’s disease?
No supplement has been proven to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, and the maker does not claim it does.
Our verdict
Advanced Memory Formula is one of the more thoughtfully formulated memory supplements, combining the most-studied brain nutrients with a generous 90-day guarantee and a fair price. Keep expectations realistic: the research is promising but mixed, and it works best as part of a brain-healthy lifestyle. If you are a healthy adult with everyday forgetfulness and your doctor is on board, it’s a reasonable, low-risk option to try.
